Privacy Law and Data Protection 101

This workshop is intended for leaders and/or privacy officers in BC based private or non-profit organizations. It will cover the basics of privacy law and related practices.

  • If you are an private or non-profit organization in BC, you should have a privacy officer.
  • In many circumstances your clients have a right to know about the personal information that you collect about them.
  • You can reduce your risk of fines and/or liability by making your organization aware of your obligations related to the collection, use and disclosure of your customer's information. 

Learning Outcomes:

 Attendance at this workshop will provide a basic understanding of how BC based private or non-profit organizations should manage sensitive information to be compliant with the relevant laws and best practices.

We cover:

  • What privacy rules and laws apply to my organisation. 
  • Standard practices and procedures around collection, use and disclosure of personal information.
  • An overview on requirements for advertising or fundraising campaigns.
  • When someone requests information from your organisation.
  • What to do if you have concerns about how someone in your organization is collecting, using or disclosing sensitive information.
  • Resources and Q & A.

Brent Parker

Bio: Brent Parker is a lawyer who practices business, health, and privacy law through Stream Law Group. His expertise is further enriched by a project and risk management background, a Master's in Public Health, and advanced data analytics training. He is actively involved in his community as a member of the Interior Health’s Research Ethics Board and on a board that enables projects for those in need or who may be living on the margins of our community. He teaches health law at the University of British Columbia and enjoys outdoor activities with his family when not in the office.
